You have to get backpackers insurance. All those other "Annual Travel Policies" only cover you for trips of 30 days max. So unless you are prepared to return to the UK once a month they are no use to you.

I was trying to remember who I used for my last backpacker trip. I think it might have been https://www.direct-backpacker.co.uk but I can't remember for sure.

I'm afraid the USA part will severely add to the cost. As I was only in the USA for 4 days of my 9 month trip I took a small gamble and excluded it from my policy, but I can't really recommend doing that. If the worst happens the cost of any medical treatment out there is very high.

I used STA travel for my back-packing insurance, about £300 for a year, worldwide (standard cover). STA are not the cheapest (you can find cheaper via a google search), but they are reasonably reputable. I made a claim and whilst I wouldn't describe their service as highly efficient, they did pay up in the end without too much hassle.

If you do go for one of the cheaper internet based companies, aim for one that is UK based (easier to hassle if you need to make a claim).
