Banging our head against the wall with Eon

Hey all,
So after a constant back and forth via online messaging with Eon over the last week or so this is the best they can do after reductions applied. We are in the unfortunate position as Martin Lewis put it of fixing very recently at a very high rate tariff.Eon are unable to offer us a tariff anywhere near the energy price guarantee and we simply cannot afford the new tariff at £287.09/month or £3,445.08/year.Can anyone in a similar position to us having fixed recently at a high priced tariff recommend what to do..should we try and switch provider maybe? or keep at it with Eon in the vain hope that they will offer us a tariff we can actually afford? Thanks,Jim

  • That's a direct debit amount.  That isn't a bill or a tariff.

You can get a tariff exactly at the EPG from E.ON Next - it's called Next Flex.

It won't cost you £2500 though, if that's what you're thinking, unless you happen to be using exactly the 'typical household usage' of 2900kWh electricity and 12000kWh gas.  If you are using more, it will cost more.

What's the basis of you paying the £287+ a month?  I'm assuming this is a DD so likely to be based on their estimate of what you use in a year and then applying your tariff.

First thing I'd do is check how much they estimate you will use.  They recently suggested my DD be increased from £120 to something like yours.  This was based on their calculation that used and estimate that suggested that our use each month would be the same as what it was last January.  Fortunately I was able to provide a more sensible estimate based on what might be high use in the winter and very low in the summer and they agreed that £120 was sufficient.  They have since reduced that by £67 due to the credit that is being applied from the £400 bit from the government.  And this all despite me being in debt with them.

So checking their maths is the first step!

I'd say understanding what a tariff is comes before checking their maths.
  • Thanks for the reply,we were quoted £331.98/month or £3,983/year on Next Flex a few days ago by Eon.
Would you say below is 'typical household usage' Electricity top,Gas below

  • Five month's summer usage does not indicate whether you are typical or not.  Only annual usage can truly do this.  Find a statement for each fuel and look for your estimated annual usage somewhere on the right hand side.

The calculators online were likely using the old OFGEM caps so don't bother with what they say at the moment.

There is no tariff that you can move to with any supplier that is cheaper than the Next Flex will be from tomorrow.  Any fixed rate tariff will be receiving a discount tomorrow that can move it towards, but no lower than, the Next Flex rates.

It doesn't matter what the tariff is if they say someone is using 20 times normal use or whatever.  Which is effectively what they did with us.   Completely made up numbers to suit their agenda.  Even a low tariff will look scary in those circumstances.
