IWantMyOwnGenie said:Hi everyone
i have googled but can’t find a clear explanation why my car is road tax free yet is not ulez compliant! It’s a diesel. Now pure evil but at the time, the opposite and low emissions… which is why we pay no road tax. Does anyone understand this ulez thing because what I do understand is that the value of my car has plummeted since ulez came into force. And it makes no sense! 😭😭. Thank you
Someone mentioned Bradford = No charge.Charges will not apply to passenger cars and motorbikes (even if you use them for work).
This excludes taxis and private hire vehicles. Please note that private cars and motorbikes may be charged in zones in other cities.
So to any personal vehicle it's free.🤦♀️

Again, ULEZ is based on your vehicles European emission status and not it's VED banding, which is based on Co2 per km.
For petrol passenger cars, there isn't massive differences between Euro 4, 5 and 6 standards.
CO and NOx (0.08 to 0.06) levels are almost identical for all three with only particulates dropping from 0.005 to 0.0045 between Euro 4 and 6.
For diesels things are a bit different.
CO stays the same but NOx dropped from 0.25 for Euro 4 to 0.08 for Euro 6 and particulates dropped from 0.025 to 0.0045 over the same range.
This is why most low emission zones allow petrols as far back as Euro 4 to go uncharged but only allow Euro 6 diesels to go uncharged, they roughly kick out the same NOx and particulates.

Can we stop this delusion that the tax we pay for owning a car or other vehicle is spent exclusively on the roads.
"Ah - but you know what I mean" is a very poor response.0 -

I have a car which is registered as private light goods and is exempt from ULEZ and other clean zones, but it's real gas guzzler. There's a lot quirks in the system.

Mine is a 2016 euro 6 diesel, ULEZ FREE, but £30 a year tax.
As I travel into the ULEZ every month or so it’s a good deal.
