Why haven't many energy companies published their new tariffs yet?

Obviously, I don't know the answer as to why the new tariffs appear to be such a secret so this is all pure speculation. I think it is a little concerning that with only 2 more working days before the new tariffs will come into force so little information is available to the general public. We all know what the average figures are going to be because of the government cap but it is of little use when it all depends on where you are living and the type of tariff you use is unknown.

I feel there has to be a reason for so many companies being so late in releasing this information which is rather annoying since they will not all be charging the same and even though it might be difficult to switch it is not impossible as Ofgem has stated the suppliers cannot stop accepting new customers under the terms of their license. All I can think of is that they do not want new customers and will not publish their tariffs in case they prove to be attractive to more people.

That's my guess and I'm sure others who are better informed will have better suggestions.

Because retail customers don't really matter in the grand scheme of things. The money will still come in – I mean, it's not as if there's a thriving buoyant market in which a myriad of suppliers have to fight for business – and the senior executives will still get nice juicy remuneration packages.

  • Unless you're on a non-standard tariff, it's easy to work out what you'll be paying from October. If you're on a fix which is cheaper than the EPG, nothing changes, until it ends. If you're on a fix which is within 4/17p per kWh (gas/electric) more than the EPG, your bill will reduced to the EPG. Beyond that, you should move to the standard variable tariff where, again, you'll be charged the EPG.

Thanks for the feedback. However, my own situation along with many others is nonstandard by dint of being an Economy 7 tariff and the rates the suppliers charge for off-peak is entirely up to them provided it remains within the limit of the cap based on average E7 usage I understand.

So that matters quite a lot since I have seen the only published figures I know of which are those by EDF and for my region, the new rate for off-peak electricity will be 13p/kWh compared to the 18p/kWh I am currently paying before the Oct change with my current supplier.

There are many like me in the same boat who haven't a clue what the E7 rate might be from their supplier on Oct 1st.

EDF have published theirs; the rate card has been posted here dozens of times in recent weeks.
Other suppliers don't seem to have published a consolidated list but you can find individual tariffs on (some of) their websites.
British Gas have added their rates to their tariff information webpage.
Octopus haven't yet, but from Saturday they should be here.
    Scottish Power, similarly, here.

I knew about the EDF tariffs as you kindly supplied a link a couple of days ago on another thread I was commenting on. The link to the Scottish Power tariffs appears to be for current rates.

My view is that information on tariffs should be freely available to the general public from every energy supplier to allow them to make sensible choices when the prices are not all going to be the same which means there is still supposedly a "market" in which the consumer has a choice.

If you can't switch to a tariff today then there is no detriment to the market by not having the rate for that tariff published.

When the tariffs actually exist, and you can switch to them, the rates will be freely available.

Of course, that's true, but my question still stands and that is why do the tariff rates not exist now with just two working days before prices rise with every supplier. I for one would like to know in advance how much I will be expected to pay for a service and that goes for every service I might buy.

It's not strange for a customer to want to know how much they'll be charged before using a service but I think it is strange for a supplier not to be able to publish their charges in good time before implementing (or imposing) them on their customers.

Oh, I completely agree with you.  Valid question and not strange to ask at all.  Just pointing out that it isn't a necessary function of the market at this precise point in time.  A technicality more than anything.
