Does anyone have any advice or which way I can turn. I'm £15,000 in debt my partner doesn't know and I can't get a balance transfer card, what do I do?  Please help

  • It's really none of my business, but if you're able to talk to your partner about it then that will be one weight off your mind.
Aside from that, head on over to the Debt-Free Wannabe board.  Post up an SOA and you'll receive plenty of constructive advice.
I know where you're coming from - been there, done that, got the t-shirt.  But if you are able to face up to reality and make determined efforts to tackle the debt head-on, it's eminently do-able.  I'm not going to say it'll be easy, but you can do it.

I've asked the forum team to move your post to the Debt Free Wannabe board, you'll get excellent , non-judgemental advice from very experienced members there. Good luck

Hello, whilst your post is waiting to be transferred could I just give a heads up to the three free debt help agencies you can turn to for help. Also non-judgemental and excellent advice.

    StepChange -  https://www.stepchange.org/

    National Debtline   -  https://nationaldebtline.org/

    Citizens Advice -  https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/

As Ebe_Scrooge said above, if you could talk to your partner, that'd be really good.

I'm someone who has also been there, done that, etc. Except I was alone and didn't have any partner to either share with or help me.

You've taken the first difficult step by asking for help. You can do this. Lots of us on this forum have done the same things.
Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. • Please can someone help.  I'm in a right old mess, I'm considering taking out a dmp, but we are switching mortgage deals with our existing provider.  The mortgage is in both names and the DMP is in mine.  Will It affect anything?  Thanks
  • From my experience (Santander) if you are staying with the same mortgage company, they don't do additional searches/checks so shouldn't be an issue.

A dmp won't affect anything directly but defaults will follow if you don't already have them.

It shouldn't cause you any problem with your existing lender.
  • What do you mean by defaults please

You'll need to post an SOA to get informed feedback and advice.  Paying off debt needs cutting of expenditure and proper budgeting.  It would also help if you are able to increase your income. Finally, it is important to understand how you came to be in this position in order to prevent history from repeating itself.

When you look at your credit file it should have a mark against those accounts where you are paying below the contractual amount.

That could be 'arrangement to pay'

But the better one is 'default'. It's better because the whole entry disappears 6 years after the account is defaulted or settled, whichever happens soonest.

The dmp provider should have explained this to you. Hopefully you are with stepchange or payplan, as these don't charge a fee
  • I haven't so far I'm managing to pay the minimum amounts on everything.  Am going to do step change I think
