Smart Gas Meter-am I reading this right?

On 5th August, I had a gas smart meter fitted. It has a red button and black button beneath it and I was told by the fitter to press the red button to get a reading.
On 16th September, Octopus told me they have been unable to connect to it to read it remotely.
So, I read it myself, it said 99999.105 cu.m.
Octopus said they would take the reading as zero, as that is what they told by the engineer.
Today, I read it again, it says 99999.428 cu.m
I've only used the gas hob infrequently since it was fitted.
I wondered if it's at 99999 waiting to go to zero, if that makes any sense.
Can anyone shed any light on this please?

Yes, you basically get free gas until it rolls over to zero, which equates to about 30p. This gas is typically used to test your appliances after it's been installed, check for leaks, etc.

Yes, that's it.  As Astria said, its an allowance for testing the system after the new meter was put in.  Until you see 00000 on the meter, just keep putting in that same reading.
  • Thanks for the replies guys and for confirming I was right in what I thought may be the case.
