Decomposing bricks on roof

Options
Hi everyone,

We have moved into a victorian house about 1 month ago. Weve gone into the roof for the first time properly yesterday to store some stuff. My other half realised that some of the brickwork here and there is almost decomposing...as in if you touch/rub it certain bricks start decomposing like dried sand falling...were a bit worried as dont know if this is an issue. Has any one out there encountered this and know what the heck it is?

many thanks!!!

your bricks aren't decomposing :D they are probably spalled (sometimes called blown)

Have a look here http://www.bricksandbrass.co.uk/diyelem/extwalls/bricks/bricks.htm for some suggestions of what to do.

I have had a few chipped out and repaired on the front of my house. Others have been patched (not brilliantly) by less careful owners. If it was inside, I wouldn't mind so much, but I have to look at their bad repairs
