Moving home - is my only option to stick with the current energy supplier at the new property?
Hi folks,
I'm moving home next Monday. The property is serviced by SSE. Is my only option to stick with them? I tried using energy comparison websites but none are offering any new customer tariffs right now, for obvious reasons!
Any help is appreciated!

You need to open an account with SSE before being able to do anything else, which at the moment is virtually impossible.
Just make sure you take readings and dated photographic evidence of those readings too.
Hope you will be very happy on your new home !1 -
Yes - you must give SSE an opening reading when you move in, and ask to go on the SVT.
You can then think about switching away, though whether that's desirable or possible is another matter!0 -
Thanks both. I've planned to take a reading on move in day after being advised by various people. It seems like I have no other options as nobody seems to be offering new customer quotes1

Nobody is offering quotes online.
Octopus and EdF have been accepting new customers by telephone.0 -

The only noticeable differences are the day/night split on E7 tariffs and Octopus with slightly cheaper standing charges (3p a day or so less).0 -
Nobody is offering fixes or variable rates, all you'll currently find available is the Energy Price Guarantee applicable for your region and that'll likely last for 2 years unless Kwasi and Vladimir change their minds.
The only reason to currently move providers as a new homeowner would be billing and customer service issues.

Unless you fancy one of Octopus's oddball tariffs, you'll be offered the same variable rates as SSE. And since the government came out with the EPG there are no conventional fixes to be had.

Thanks all. Seems like there's no way or reason to switch right now. Just need to contact the new supplier, let them know, set up an account and ensure I take a meter reading on the day of the move so I don't get overcharged. Then buckle in and ride the energy storm out!3
