Shell Energy hassling to get smart meter fitted
Hello, just wondered if anyone else is getting bombarded by Shell Energy with requests to install a smart meter?
We've basically had the gas off for months, only using it to heat the water twice a day. Other things like the electrics, we've just been ensuring nothing is left switched on unnecessarily, like lights etc. Hence our bills have been consistently 'low' for the past few months. Shell tell me that our meters are now 'faulty' and they need to install smart meters. To me, I can see our meters are working, it's just that we're not giving shell the wads of cash they crave, by us being frugal.
I'm just keen to hear from other customers who might be in a similar position.
Cheers!

You say that your usage is legitimate - therefore what have you got to lose? New meters will just record your actual usage without Shell having to 'doubt' you.#2 Saving for Christmas 2024 - £1 a day challenge. £325 of £3660

If you mean ‘end-of-life’ then the supplier has the right to fit smart meters without the homeowner’s permission. If necessary, they can apply to a Court for an Entry Warrant as permitted by The Gas and Electricity Acts.
Smart meters are just certified meters that send data back to the supplier. How exactly would Shell be making ‘wads of cash’?0 -
If you've been heating all your hot water with it, the gas hasn't been 'basically off'. Your usage would be the same over the summer as any property with gas CH and DHW.
It is possible that lower than historic usage has flagged up a potential meter fault on the billing system. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I had a similar situation with Eon Next which was resolved using the chat function,no further phone calls, text messages, emails, letters etc, etc, maybe Shell have such an option.
