Universal credit and people living with you

Hello everyone,

Could someone point me in the right direction I'm going around in circles.  I receive carers allowance and up until recently worked. I lost my job but have  kept going by using savings sparingly and the carers allowance help's.

I have been on universal credit for the last 5 months or so, I am single with no kids. My elderly mum is now needing more care she lives in her own house, if she moves in with me, after I have told UC will they then ask for her income details- because she is living with me or is this for couples .

She is retired and will be probably stay with me as and when she feels like it because she loves her own place so much despite needing help.

Many thanks

Your benefits are separate from your mum's. Her income will have no impact on your UC.

What elements of UC are you receiving ?
Are you in receipt of the housing element.
If so this may be affected by your mum moving in with you -https://england.shelter.org.uk/housing_advice/benefits/housing_benefit_deductions_when_living_with_non_dependants

Hi,  I only get the carers element no housing element. I was worried they would ask about total income into the house, she has savings, worked all her life you see, me on the other hand trying to find a part time job that fits in with caring etc.

If you're renting how do you manage to afford to pay that if you're not claiming for any help with housing element?

my OH got carer's allowance for looking after his mom who lived with us.  At no point did they ask about my income, nor did they ask about my MiL's.

You would need to be really clear whether she is actually moving in or just staying over sometimes for care.  Not just for UC but for Council Tax, her other bills, your potentially increased bills, etc.

OP hasn't said that the are renting.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
