It's not ARMATURE. I have 2 guesses left.

I'd read up on escapements looking for a related component which I could link to Atlas (as in Greek mythology) but couldn't see one.

Thinking allowed....

_IF_ "escapement" is involved and you take the first part of the clue, might you be left with "MENT" as the first part of the word?
