There was a time when 'savvy savers' used to go out and buy a year's worth of staple goods at a time because they had the space to store it and because they reckoned it was cheaper to do it that way. Ithink that few people have the space or the cash in hand to do that now but maybe I am wrong.1

It is also a buffer for when other expenses eg fuel are more than expected such as in a hard winter - i can still feed us. We have dietary and sensory food requirements which mean if I cannot get certain items life gets difficult as substitutions may not be there. I worry too about availability as money is tight for producers and supplies hard to source - global, avian flu to name a couple. We did not go mad buying in bulk rather have done this for quite a while on limited income.

We do maintain a good stock of pantry items, gas bottles, candles, wood, coal and petfood's. I live over twenty miles from the nearest supermarket so we tend to do a "big shop" once a week/fortnight when I travel the 160 miles round trip to my office. WFH the rest of the time. Our roads are sometimes closed due to bad weather. It all depends on individual circumstances. Also with the world the way it is now I think it can decrease anxiety to know you can feed everyone and heat your home for a while if the worst happens.1

I tend to stock up on things I like, things that are on discount, or things I know will be taken off sale at particular supermarkets. Particularly Aldi or Home Bargains, as they tend to have limited runs on certain items, which disappear after a while.2

I've been popping an extra tin of Ambrosia chocolate orange custard in the basket when I go to the shops - it's bloody delicious, but it's also seasonal, so I've got five tins in the cupboard at the moment in case I get a summer craving for it.
