Moving home - energy supplier

Options
Hi,
I am currently renting a property and use So Energy.
I am due to complete on a new property this Friday which is with Scottish Power.
The question I have is that there is a cross over of a month where I will be responsible for both properties.
So, do I switch So Energy onto the new property and let them know about both for a month?
Or just let the So Energy one finish and start afresh with Scottish Power?
I'm thinking as there aren't any good deals to be had, the second is probably best?
I do have a large amount of credit with So Energy if that makes any difference?
Thanks in advance.

  • Each house has a different account. You will be closing the old account with So when you move out.  You will be starting a new account with SP when you move in.

If you later want to switch your SP account to So, you can.
  • On their website So Energy say:
If you are moving home and would like to take us with you, we must register your new property onto a new fixed tariff agreement (we cannot move your agreement with you). Because of this, we will not charge exit fees on the final bill for your old property. Find out more in our guide to Moving Home.

It's worth checking with So Energy.

  • Ok thanks all.
I've never done it this way so I'm trying to figure it all out!

You will be in a deemed contract with SP at the new property. It's unlikely that So will be accepting new customers at present anyway-there is no point. The cheapest deal will be SVT under the EPG.
Any credit owing on your old account will be returned to you once you give final readings and a final bill is produced. Normally 6 weeks maximum.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

The OP is already with So Energy and so would not be a new customer.
So Energy say you can take them with you, you will be on a new fixed tariff agreement, the main thing is that they will not charge exit fees on the new tariff.
It's worth a phone call to check all that with So Energy :)

If So allow tariff transfers to new properties, fine, but not so fine if it's only possible on an expensive fix. And it doesn't alter the fact that the OP will still be in a deemed contract with SP and will need to register with them first before doing a switch back to So, if permitted. At that point, they would be an ex-So customer.
A few suppliers offer tariff transfers, but you cannot transfer the account itself.
OP may as well just stay with SP on SVT under the EPG.

You don't say anything about the exit fees.
I still think that the OP would be better off phoning So Energy, getting more information and then making a decision.

There are normally no exit fees if you change property: the contract is void.
If So levy such a charge, it must be unique.
Since it is impossible to transfer the supply straight over to So (without going via SP first), it would seem to me that the exit fees would apply anyway, unless they waive them on the basis that you contract to switch back to them within a certain time frame.
Edit: from the link you supplied, it would seem that they offer a 3 month window for you to switch back to them, after which exit fees will apply.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • From the So Energy web site:

I'm moving out, what do you need to know?

Can you supply my next property?

Great, we’d love you to stay with us! For more information on this have a look at our page here.

Will I be charged any early exit fees?

Early exit fees will only be charged if your current tariff(s) are not in the last 49 days of your contract.

This is exactly why the OP should call So Energy get good information and make an informed decision.

And from the page linked behind the word "here":

So - exactly what everyone else has been saying.

Particularly as it isn't a move - you can't have one account for two properties.
