Is there such a thing as a high yield / high growth Investment Trust (any tips would be good; anything with a total return - with dividends re-invested - of 4% plus per year) or does this investing Shangri-la exist in my head only?

Yes there are many ITs that have a high yield. The overall return might be lower than a less income focused one though.
