Income Support at the aged of 60

Hi, this is for my dad who is getting himself all stressed out. He was claiming income support due to being sick and not able to work. He has his partner living with him who is now claiming pension.

He wasn't paid his benefit last week, so rang them asked why, as he assumed he would either get his income support or pension credit as he has just turned 60.

The said they would ring him back and sort out a giro. Never rang him back but he did get his giro. But the letter cam with it, I cannot even make any sense of it. Contradicts the sentence before and doesn't say what he will be getting from now on.

I wondered if anyone knew what he as entitle to at the aged of 60, long term sick, unable to work. His partner who lives with him is 60 and claims pension of about £120. Any help would be much appreciated. He suffer with angina and all this strees is making him quite ill. Thanks

About 2 months before his 60th birthday income support would have sent a letter automatically advising his income support would stop and that he should make a claim for pension credit. Pension credit is a means tested benefit and any capital savings and investment over 6K will be taken into account as will the state pension his partner receives, also if he or his partner also get a works related/ occupational pension or any annuities and any money from any part time work done. If either of them receive attendance allowance or disability living allowance this will not be taken into account. Get him to call the pension credit application line on 0800 99 1234 and once the claim has been taken and the details put onto the CAM system to process it he can call 0845 60 60 265 for an update.

In the real world this does not happen very often.

As he actually claimed his pension? As far as I understand he will have to do that first before he looks into pension credit.

He won't be able to claim his pension until he's 65. Only women can claim at 60.

Well as someone who takes the occasional new claim for pension credit on the phone the majority of calls I take start off with "I have had this letter from income support telling me to make a new claim for pension credit" and the average time they call before their 60th birthday is about 6 weeks...so it does happen on a fairly regular basis, just speaking from experience
