My husband made a report to Crimestoppers and they called him back and asked him to approach the person he had reported.
Fair enough but to be blunt, that is incredible and not the Crimestoppers I am familiar with.

Are you sure it was just a general chat and a joke?

They can only come back to you if you give them your details.

Crimestoppers for safe reporting of crime that is non-urgent and you don't want to be identified .

Is the word "not" missing from there somewhere?
  • " Overall, crime has fallen continuously for decades and is actually lower than it was in the early eighties where we weren't so highly surveilled."

Should that be reported crime? Many crimes are not reported now because the Constabulary will not be interested. Figures can be and are manipulated with many things too.
However, if you wrote boo to someone online/antisocial media etc. and it upset them, they'd be there in force to modify your thinking!

Possibly. But how would you suggest we measure unreported crime?
  • As part of my role I have regular meetings with the local police. My experience is that they would rather have useful information even if anonymous rather than not at all.  Consequently I get quite a lot of information and am able to pass it on which has led to crimes they didn't know about being investigated and resulting convictions.

By means of research such as the British Crime Survey, which asks people whether they’ve been the victim of crime. And in general shows much the same trend.

You can't. But a fall in reported crime could be due to either a) fewer crimes are being committed and the reporting rate reflects this, or b) crime rate remains the same but fewer crimes are being reported. Many people assume (a) is always the case and don't account for (b). I think that was OAT's point.

Would Crimestoppers go to effort of calling back- they must have traced the number or had caller ID- to have a chat and and a joke?
