EDF's new Submit A Reading web page swaps the input fields for Economy 7 day/night rates

I'm posting this for the benefit of anyone else who might have the same issue:

I am on Economy 7. For some reason, my meter has always been set up so that Rate 1 is the night rate, and Rate 2 is the day rate (which is apparently the opposite of the standard way they are set up). But it has always seemed to work correctly: the meter displays a * on the rate which is active at a given time, the night figures increase rapidly in winter when the storage heaters are on overnight, and the figures appear on the correct lines on my bills.

I normally send readings on the 1st of the month, but missed the one at the start of September. A few days ago EDF sent me a prompt to submit a reading by 25 Sept.

Today I went to take that reading, and submit it as normal... but found that it now directs you to a different, dedicated Submit A Reading page, which has a different layout from the one I've used it before. The issue is that on this new page, the labels describing the two rate input fields don't match the "last reading" figures below them!
  • The top data entry field says it's for entering Normal Rate/Day Rate/Rate 1. but the number below it says "Last billed reading 49496 submitted on 1st August 2022". That figure of 49496 is actually my last NIGHT reading (which on my meter displays as rate 2).
  • The lower data entry field says it's for entering Low Rate/Night Rate/Rate 2. But the number below it says "Last billed reading 9903 submitted on 1st August 2022". That last reading figure is actually my last DAY reading (which on my meter displays as rate 1).

So I didn't know which way round to enter them! My worry was that if I entered my day/night figures according to the labels above the input fields, EDF might go: "Oh, since the start of August your night usage has gone from 9903 to 49600. And your day usage has dropped from 49496 to 10000??? ERROR! ERROR! DOES NOT COMPUTE!"

And yet if I entered them according to the "last billed reading" figures, that could likewise potentially be interpreted the wrong way round!

So I contacted EDF by web chat, explained the issue, clarified that the previous readings on 1st August were correct, and gave them the new readings directly. They said it'll be reflected on the web page within 24 hours.

So for now this appears to have been sorted out. But I'm making this post in case anyone else has the same issue. (And also, if it doesn't get sorted out, I can come back here and post an update...)

If you had put your readings in which ever way round you needed to do, as long as they followed on, you would have been billed correctly
