Edit: I've also contacted TfL Customer Services by phone (number is 0343 222 1234 for future reference), and they said that they will not pay out for consequential losses given that I was making a journey on National Rail with a National Rail ticket.
They told me that such claims should be addressed to the company which sold me my ticket, which I have not done since their opening hours are limited and I know what was meant is that I should contact Avanti since they operated the first train which connected with the Underground transfer to Liverpool Street, where I was originally intending to catch a train to Norwich from. I have therefore contacted Avanti. They said no, and told me that I should have taken another train instead. I have therefore decided to telephone them and will post again when I eventually manage to get through to someone. Thanks.0 -
Update: Avanti advised me that they are unable to pay out for an incident that resulted in me beings stranded at Colchester since they don't operate trains there, they have therefore passed my claim onto Greater Anglia. I will see how this goes.1

OK, I've contacted Avanti, they have passed the claim onto Greater Anglia, and they have contacted me to state that they are not the right train company to deal with this and advised me to contact Avanti again, I've contacted both companies and been told to wait until tomorrow for a response from Greater Anglia. Whose issue is it given that I have now contacted both companies and neither accepts responsibility, each company blames the other. Someone at Avanti did reference it being a TfL issue, but I've already contacted them, and been told that it's in fact a "National Rail" issue, and that I should contact the company I bought the tickets off, I haven't done that since the problem should be resolved by the responsible train company, and I'd argue that whilst Avanti are responsible, so are Greater Anglia given that they clearly told me to go to Colchester, and from what I've read any Train Operating Company in a position to help has a contractual duty to assist, I assume that means paying out of pocket expenses after the fact if they refuse to assist at the time?0

Update: GA passed the responsibility for the farce onto Avanti and told me to contact them again. They also remarked that I could contact TfL if I wished, but I've already tried that so won't persist. Back to dealing with Avanti I guess.0
