Blaming the victim. People shouldn't intercept and steal.Emmia said:Why did you post such a large value cheque? Surely it would make more sense to go into a bank branch / post office counter and deposit it there yourself??
Behave. Where's the blame? Seem's a reasonable question in this day and age.

Thanks for that. It's certainly food for thought. Brave of you to express such a controversial opinion.MalMonroe said:

The victim was more than a bit daft posting a cheque like this, let’s be honest.MalMonroe said:

I'm not, but posting (presumably not recorded / signed for / tracked delivery) seems an odd thing to do with something of high value, like this cheque, a diamond necklace...MalMonroe said:

Is this something the OP does as a matter of course?

If the cheque was lost in the post (but not cashed/paid in) it could be cancelled and reissued, since the money would still be in the account to pay the OP... But the cheque has now been cashed, so the money is no longer in the original account.user1977 said:Thinking about it, who is the victim here? Isn't there an argument that the drawer of the cheque still owes the OP the money? After all, they would if the cheque had simply been lost in the post. Does the payee take on the risk of this sort of fraud?
Whilst fraud has taken place, I think the OP may struggle to get the money back from anyone, as in hindsight by posting the cheque to a bank the OP fundamentally facilitated that fraud.

I can't believe that Barclays have passed so much information to the OP. As OP should not be chasing this. It is down to who sent the cheque & why send a cheque. Banking payment is more secure.
Barclays are on seriously dangerous ground for all that information they gave to the OP about someone else's account (even if fraudulent) that they had no right to do. Someone should be getting the sack & facing a massive fine or even jail over that.. 👀🤦♂️Clear breach of Data protection.
If it goes to FOS. Barclays are well shafted here.Life in the slow lane3 -
The OP in the 1st post, states, "We have seen a picture of them". Aha.
Has it been passed to the police. If not, who is withholding evidence?
Withholding evidence is naughty is it not??
A very strange case?????

The person who wrote the cheque needs to report this. Then the police can contact Barclays for the evidence. If they are interested. The bank will not report it. As they have no loss.binao said:The OP in the 1st post, states, "We have seen a picture of them". Aha.

Having dealt with stopped/fraud cheques previously. I can say that is as rare as hens teeth. As the only reason was for finger prints. Which was pointless given the number of people that handled them. Now they are all scanned, so finding a original cheque is not easy as they are destroyed very quickly.Life in the slow lane2 -
Yes. I can't believe Barclays have passed on so much information about the fraudster. The OP even claims to have been shown a photo of them(?!?).born_again said:I can't believe that Barclays have passed so much information to the OP. As OP should not be chasing this. I'm not sure this isn't some wind-up.

Mr @Manxman_in_exile With your 7.4k posts experience would you like to present your evidence that leads you to say, "I'm not sure this isn’t some kind of a wind-up."
