my son has just gone out to china for a year to teach english.
we don't have xp or 2000 on our computer and don't know yet whether any of the instant chat programmes will work his end
so we are looking for the cheapest way to keep in touch - we have talk talk for our phone but are willing to change.
any thoughts or suggestions about instant chat or free pc calls or the best phone company
he has a mobile and a land line number but it isn't the mobile number that he went out with ???
thanks

Dial 08444 629 629 from your BT line(you may need to prefix it with 1280 as you are using Talk Talk) and then dial the Chinese number. 2p per minute at all times.0

18866 charge 2p/minute (+1p connection charge) to Chinese landlines and mobiles (I assume his mobile is a chinese number!)
As for free PC to PC calls experiment with:
MSN Messenger
Yahoo Messenger
Skype
to see what works best for you,

http://www.telesavers.co.uk/ for the 08444 629 629 number - you do not need to register - just dial the number followed by the international number in China. To infinity and beyond!0

Don't forget to dial 1280 before the 0844 number, to ensure that the call is routed via BT.

With Skype you can call landlines and mobiles from your computer. China would cost you €0.022 per minute. So that is 1.5p per minute...
But then I just realised that you don't have XP or 2000...So that comment isn't very relevant...
Though you could always upgrade to Linux for free...0
