Never had a dog but my cat's own me !  I obey their every command - open the door, close the door, breakfast, more ..........
Scratch their ears, polish their coats, provide suitable cat toys not forgetting a fabric mouse stuffed with catmint, clean the cat litter tray as soon as it’s used, provide freshly laundered sheets in various parts of the house as they will want to chop and change their resting areas …

Note of caution:   No matter how much they plead, it is not wise to provide them with pampas grass.  A well trained cat can destroy one stem in seconds and it will take you a long time to pick up the bits.   :D   I found out the hard way.
Not just pampas @Murphybear , one of mine loved all ornamental grasses - they'd leap into it and rake it to death with their back legs ..... i gave up trying to educate them in the end and just let them have it 😂😂

It’s a shame we can’t train them to use the vacuum cleaner, but that’s what they have staff for.  :D

I think it is good to know that I can return my dog if I cannot look after him anymore.  He is my second rescue dog.  My last dog was from a small private rescue home.  I had him for 12 years.  He was special.  That home had very few formalities, but you could see that the owners cared a lot about giving dogs a home.

I must inform my son that he never did own the cats that he got as kittens from a rescue centre and lived with for 19 and 22 years respectively.  Perhaps he ought to inform them that the cats have now died!!

Some rescues certainly say that they retain ownership. This is mainly so that a rehomed dog must be returned to them rather than the new owners passing on the dog to someone else.
I remember informing them when my dog was pts at aged 12 or so.

This was in the contract we signed with the Dogs Trust when we got our last dog.
It wasn't so much that we weren't 'owners' but it committed us to return the dog to them if we couldn't continue to care for him.
We were registered as the owners with the vets and with the chip company and the Trust only contacted us once to make sure the dog had settled down well.
