Hello.

My dad was to have a electric smart meter installed yesterday by E.ON.

The installation person said that he could not do it becacause the existing meter is on an asbestos board

He siad the he would get E.ON to get their special team to come in and that they would overboard the asbestos board with wood and then fix the smart meter to that.

He was in his van for about 10 mins and then he knocked ont door and said E.ON have changed the way they do it and my dad would have to get a special team in to remove the board at my dad's expense.

He then gave my dad UKPN phone number and said call them and they should come out and remove the board free of charge.

Has anybody been in this situation and got the asbestos board changed free or will he just have to have the existing meter for now?

The meter was installed onto the asbestos board on 1999 as there is a label attatched to the cables.

  • When a installer goes out to install a meter and they find asbestos normally it's the DNO (distribution network operator) who would come out and sort it out, in your dad's case that is UKPN. This is again normally done totally free of charge.

I will tell him and over the weekend/next week i will call UKPN to see what they can do.

I just hope my dad has not called anybody to remove the board.

My dad called that phone number and he got muddled up i think as the call handler thought it was an emergency and was going to sent a response team to him asap.

He said he explained again and was then asked for a photo which he could not do so left it at that.

I went onto UKPN website and then filled out the form and supplied some photos and the earliest they can look at the board is 25.10.2022 and then they will decide if it needs paying for and if they cant swap it out they will make another date for that to happen.

He had E.oN call him yesterday asking why he cancalled the install. He explained and the person said that on their screen it was a no show and they were going to charge him a fee.

After a few mins the person said sorry and that somebody had input the wrong reasons why the installer could not carry out the job she then said that he could have another installation date next week but he said no, i will wait for new board to be installed 1st.
