meter reading day

hi all, so Mr Lewis just talking about getting your readings in before the price per kwh goes up in October, but that falsely saying you have used more than you have this month is fraud- BUT i dont give readings on a regular basis and my energy company just guesses and i pay by direct debit- if some months later i give a readng and they have been overestimating all the time before  i end u with a negative £ bill!! woop woop have a nice day!
So- given this info would i be better to not bother giving a reading at the end of this month (its been about 4 months since i gave a reading so ive been paying more than ive used for ages) and let them assume im using so much and charge me at the lower rate, then surely if i then give a reading next month at the higher £per kwh, ill pay for less than i used (hopefully significantly) - not fraud cos ive never given misinformation, just didnt give information. Any problem with this idea?

  • No problem, but it wouldn't work in much of a meaningful way.  When you give your actual reading in future, they can go back and re-estimate all the readings in between to correct for exactly this sort of thing.  They might not get it exactly right, but they'll get close enough for it not to matter a whole lot.

When you submit a meter reading your supplier will review and recalculate all the previous estimates and rebill based on this recalculation.
You run the risk of paying more, not less.

  • the thing is ive been with them 10 years and theyve never got it any nearer correct over the years,
i only ask cos of the massive hike next month Mr Lewis was suggesting people get their meter readings in by the end of the month so they dont get more added to the next months bill which will be charged at the higher rate, but in my instance my useage will be lower than estimated (for several months so been accumulating) so should i let them over charge me while i am on a cheaper £kwh and then let them know next month after the price has gone up, tbh i think ive answered my own q- and again NOT fraud- i am not giving misinformation.
  • From the Fraud Act, 2006

Fraud by failing to disclose information (Section 3)

    The defendant:

    • failed to disclose information to another person
    • when he was under a legal duty to disclose that information
    • dishonestly intending, by that failure, to make a gain or cause a loss.

Like Section 2 (and Section 4) this offence is entirely offender focussed. It is complete as soon as the Defendant fails to disclose information provided he was under a legal duty to do so, and that it was done with the necessary dishonest intent. It differs from the deception offences in that it is immaterial whether or not any one is deceived or any property actually gained or lost.

Most suppliers will recalculate back to the last actual reading when you give your next actual reading, so if you don't give one close to the end of the month, you risk them getting the allocation between the periods wrong, in either direction, so do you feel lucky?

  • mwt dunno thats why i asked the q i guess
