Wrong gas meter
Hi, I moved to a new property supplied by British Gas. I set up an account t with them and then moved to Eon with whom I had fixed deal. When I checked with BG that the gas meter on the account was correct the customer service guy reassured me, but in fact the number is wrong. During the installation my meter reading has been assigned to a neighbour three houses down the road and mine to him. The issue is that I live on my own and then neighbour has a large family. I complained officially with BG and asked to rectify the national gas meter database, also eon made the same request. Bottom line is that nothing has been done and my DD has increased astronomically. How can I get the correct meter assigned to my house and corrected on the national database? Many thanks

It is a complicated process that only your supplier can resolve.
When a property is built, it is allocated a MPAN for electricity and a MPRN for gas. The two meter serial numbers are linked to the MPAN and MPRN. You must NOT attempt to break these links.
When properties are built, the developer allocates a plot number. If the local Council is slow to allocate a postcode and house numbers, the developer will register your MPAN and MPRN against, say, Plot 6. Often, as happened to me, the word ‘plot’ is not registered on the two databases. So Plot 6 becomes number 6. This can happen across the whole of the development.
You need need to contact CADENT and ask them to confirm the MPRN that is linked to your meter serial number. Once you have this information, email BG with the MPRN along with a photo of the gas meter attached to your property (showing the actual meter serial number) and ask them to update the postal address attached to the MPRN. The meter serial number will then be allocated to your property.
Clearly, this has implications for other homeowners. In my case, on a small development of 14 homes, it took the new homes supplier team 6 months to update the database for all the properties.
If you or your supplier attempt to break the MPRN/meter serial link you will unleash total chaos.0
