Wrong Nation insurance Number, what do I do

Recently changed jobs and was handed my P45 but the national insurance number is 1 number wrong. what do i do?

I worked at the company for around 2.5 years and noticed anything on my P60 or pay slips. When I was handed my P45, I noticed that my NI number is one number wrong.

do you have any payslips you can check?  how big a company is it - a small place might be simply typing things out and it's a simple typo that they can reissue.

You should find that your new employer will be sent a correction notice when they receive the first FPS that contains your information.

Your correct NI number should be sent by HMRC to your new employer when they do their first submission with you in their data. We have employees who write their NI number incorrectly & HMRC finds the correct one & we change it.

The OP needs to check if  the wrong NI number has been used by his old employer for his NI  contributions  as , if so, they will have been credited to the wrong person.

Hi, you can always login to your personal tax account on the HMRC site and send them a message about it. It won't hurt and it may even help.

I've often done that when I've had a problem or query. They do actually respond quite quickly, in my experience. And you have nothing to lose.

Where exactly is the option to send HMRC a message from your personal tax account? I have previously searched for such a facility but couldn't find it & have just double checked & can find nowhere that I can submit a message to HMRC.
  • I have been working for 10years with wrong NI number how do I get this fixed
