Yesterday I received notice from my energy company of the price increase which they say will come into effect from the 1st of October but don't they still have to give 30 days notice of an increase?

No, that was removed quite some time ago. Now it's just some general wording about "appropriate" notice - which gets translated as "enough time to switch in normal circumstances" or "a week will probably do".1

Plus anybody being notified of a price increase right now is getting a significantly smaller increase due to the government intervention, which in turn is the reason for the short notice. Not really a situation for consumers to feel they've been hard done by.2

What would you do if you were given notice? No other supplier will offer anything less so we're really in a "take it or leave it" situation.
