Bathroom pipe leak lead to kitchen ceiling falling in

Bathroom pipe leak lead to kitchen ceiling falling in,  i’ve spoken to the insurance company who were going to send somebody round to have a look at it but I just want to kind of just realistically understand what are they likely to cover here there’s been water pouring onto my fridge and washing machine all night long so they’re buggered.
Obviously the ceiling is going to need to be repaired and the floor in the bathroom.
Some appliances were directly underneath where the water was pouring the air cooker the toaster the kettle.
My units are all soaked and the foods damaged I don’t want to take the Mickey or equally there’s a £500 access on this claim so it’s already costing me a fortune and obviously I was not anticipating this.
Where’s the line in the sand in terms of making claims ?

  • This is exactly why you have insurance.  Yes, you've a £500 excess and yes, your premiums will rise for the next few years due to having made a claim.  But from what you've described, the cost to repair the damage will be far in excess of this, so it should be a no-brainer to make a claim.
If you've got an assessor from the insurance company coming round then obviously he'll be best-placed to tell you exactly what is and isn't covered.  But most "standard" policies should cover everything you've described, and they usually also cover up to (I think) £500 worth of food if the freezer is kaput and the food has spoiled.

I wasn’t sure whether I was taking the mick with the food claim but obviously with the  price of it it’s horrendous.
  • If the food is genuinely ruined then you aren't taking the mick.  Check your policy documents, but most policies will cover loss of food up to a specified limit.

Is the food actually ruined? I would expect a fridge freezer door to be relatively waterproof, plus the fridge has a drain so if any water did get in it should flow away.

In answer to your question I'd expect them to replace/repair anything that's broken. Certainly the pipework itself, plus the ceiling. Is the floor in the bathroom damaged? What they won't do is replace stuff you feel should be replaced if it's still usable. In terms of the fridge freezer/washing machine I'd expect them to be able to take a reasonable soaking as they're largely sealed. Are they not working at all?

I'm not really sure what they do if some kitchen units are knackered and some are fine, as in will they replace the lot or just the damaged. It might depend on your policy.

The freezer I had to turn off because I was concerned about the electrical wiring hanging out from the ceiling with water dripping off it so obviously everything in the freezer had to go in the bin

The washing machine I’m just worried about turning it on in case it blows all the electrics and then I’ve got that to deal with as well so I was just gonna leave it to dry I feel 48 hours before attempting to use them,  they really did get a good soaking.  9 hours of water pouring on them
