Gas Meter Not Working (British Gas)

I've just realised that my gas smart meter (version 1) has stopped working and I've been allocated an estimated bill for my gas usage over the last few months.
British Gas have agreed to visit my home to fit a new meter in October.

However, when the new meter is fitted will it be able to retrospectively calculate what I have been using over the recent months? or will it just kick-off with a zero reading?

Err no - it is a meter with no ability to travel back in time. Your new meter will either have a 00000 reading or slightly less to allow for leak testing. You will be billed from 00000.

Given that it is summer, how much gas have you been using?
  • Thanks for confirming - I thought so.
I have been using very, very little given the summer period & the current rhetoric around increasing prices. Worryingly, I think the meter may have been out-of-action for quite a few months without me realising.
Which I guess means that I may well get billed via an estimate, for more than I have actually used?

Should be able to use the previous year during the same period to get a reasonable idea but all these energy companies have gone into stealing money mode so good luck with that.

    Hi,
did you never check the estimated readings?

  • I've only had 1 x estimated reading that covers the last 3-months.
  • What happened? In similar situation.

The new meter will start at zero.

It should be possible to extract the last 13 months data from the old one
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
