Energy comparison providers telling me I cannot change

Hi, last yr I had an account with Neon Reef (elec only).  I'm sure folk here know all about that.

British Gas Evolve moved me on to a standard variable tariff (33% more than Neon Reef tariff) from Nov 2021 til July 2022.  Due to uncertainty and instablity, I didn't settle the account and thought I'd wait til things had cleared up.

So, now there seems to be some stability and I need to get on top the situation.  I'll contact BG soon.

Anyhow, I tried to look at the tariffs available on the energy comparison providers but they all seem to tell me that I can't change?  Is this because there's some sort of lien on the address for the unpaid debt?  What if there was a new tenant?

Also, the comparison sites always seem to be want more data than is necessary.  I find this intrusive.

  • The government Energy Price Guarantee means it's pointless for most to move, and managing the transition to this is why you're seeing the messages you are about not being able to switch.

No idea about the debt, but as things stand most people are stuck where they are anyway, because energy providers are not falling over themselves to get new customers.

Out of interest, what overly intrusive information do you think that the comparison sites are asking for? Just because I don’t remember being asked for anything that I thought was unnecessary.

None of the suppliers actually want new customers because they loose money on each one. (the exceptions were Edf and Octopus)

The situation with a new tenant is different in that they have to take on the incoming tenant.

What is 'intrusive' about supplying your postcode and annual kWh usage?
If you account with NR has been properly transferred, then any debt should have carried over to your new BG account.
There is no block made on addresses, unless there has been something like meter theft recorded in the past.

They need post code & Address to work out your Distribution Network Operator. As they charge different amounts depending on where you live.

Unless you are economy 7, there won't be any differences.

They are not asking to switch tariff but set up a new one.  So, not the same thing.

    Like what?
name, address, kWh use and that is pretty much it.    All things that are necessary to give a price.
