Posting Sodastream with CO2 canister

I understand that the canisters are either restricted items or prohibited with Royal Mail & most other couriers & non-compliance risks a fine. But I just can’t find any info on whether I can actually legally post this contained within the Sodastream itself or not. I’ve been advised to look at ADR exemptions, but this is pretty complicated & a lot of reading & leaves me none the wiser. Any advice (apart from the obvious ’remove the canister’)? Such things are obviously sent through the post when you buy them new online, so I’m presuming there is a correct method?

  • Can part used canisters be removed, do they self seal? If so it may be the same as sending loose canisters when removed.

When I last posted a Sodastream I also could not find any information on whether the canister could be included within the Sodastream or not. So I sent it without the canister and "drop-shipped" a new canister from an online store to the recipient. The original canister is still sitting here unused!
  • From Google I came across the snowhead.com forum where one person claimed UK Mail takes cannisters. However, I cannot see the date of that post so don't know if it is correct.

I also seen a catering equipment website that states it sends cannisters with DPD as Royal Mail do not accept them.
  • Thanks all, I got on live chat with DPD - and yes I can send UK to UK but not abroad - but frustratingly, they won't take anything glass! Listed under Prohibited:
"Any Articles (Or Part Of Them) That Are Made Up Of China, Glass, Porcelain, Earthenware Or Other Similar Materials"
  • The issue is if the Canister is likely to be on an Aircraft in its journey.
The standard couriers as long as you declare should be fine.
RM uses aircraft for some domestic shipments.
  • No one will accept it with the canister - I’ve tried asking loads of different couriers. Only DPD will, but I’d then have to send the glass bottle with a different courier as they won’t take glass. It’d be easier collecting pigeon feathers, sellotaping them to my arms and hollowing out my bones and trying to learn to fly the darned thing to a destination myself!
