Well , by summer, I mean this week next year. Should I book a holiday now, or wait until next year? Thinking if CoL goes up and we hit a recession, what is the likelihood of getting a better deal at Easter booking say, rather than today?

With the value of the pound collapsing against the dollar, in which all aviation fuel is bought, the likelihood is that airfares will go up and depending on the destination, so may other parts of the holiday. Tour operators may cancel holidays rather than discount them, so waiting may well be a real gamble for next year1

I've never understood the desire to book so far ahead - unless, for example, you are constrained by unmoveable holiday dates from your employer , or a set in stone event such as a wedding etc.I doubt if deals will be any better at Easter than what's currently on offer - and I don't think there's an if in the CoL scenario or recession, we are there already. It might improve of course, but that's crystal ball territory. At the end of the day it's a pay your money and take your chances - or not.0

If you are flexible on dates, destination, and hotel then its cheapest to book 6-8 weeks before you go
If you need to go in the school holidays, Xmas, etc and are fussy where you go then you should book much earlier - the next dates id be looking out for are Black Friday deals and the Boxing Day sales
Also Tour Operators with committed stock (Jet2hols, TUI etc) tend to have good late deals but Tour Ops that don't commit (EG Easyjet Holidays) tend to have better early booking prices
If you get a good price and are ready to book don't forget to see if any of the Travel Agents on MSE can discount your price here
