Best drill bits

There is an article running at the moment about best drills.

But what are the best drill bits / drill bit sets to buy - without costing mega bucks?

Main use will be for average house DIY stuff ( i.e putting up curtain rails etc - plaster and concrete use).

Any recommendation would be welcome.

Hi keep an eye on Aldi weekly offers. They had 118 piece set 2 weeks ago for £9.99 -had eveything you would need for your average diy. If you pop in to your local Aldi they may still have some left over.

I'd be interested to know if there really is much difference between cheap bits and more costly branded ones. I was drilling holes in concrete posts a few weeks ago and found that the cheap one I had (from a set, similar price to Aldi) seemed to be more effective than the individual one I'd paid about £5 for.

Pay a bit more and get some quality branded drill bits. Especially if you are doing them for more heavier work.

I bought a challange drill bit set from argos and the masonary bits are completly useless. They bend like spageti. I dont recomend them at all.

Ask yourself - "am I drilling a few holes, or planning to drill a few dozen holes ?" - if the answer is the latter, get some recognisable bits - in no order whatsoever apart from as I think of them to type Bosch, Black&Decker (Pirahna & DeWalt are B&D brands), Wolf, Plasplugs (if there are no proper drills available).

A sharp drill bit is a pleasure to use - a cheap one isn't worth the amount of swearing it will generate. If you're near a Black & Decker Outlet store they do get some amazing bargains in that line of things (drill bit kits were on Mix'n'Match BOGOF in the one in Royal Quays North Shields last time I was in, your choice of Kits of drill bits for Masonry, Metal or Wood - £6 per kit)

buy the correct bit for the job you are doing , most sets are usually full of bits that you would hardly ever use , so IMO just buy the bits that you actually need .

Cobalt bits are about the best for metal work but unfortunately they do cost mega bucks when compared to other hss bits

lip and spur bits are best for drilling into wood and most board materials

and obviously masonary / sds bits for brick , concrete , blockwork etc

I've had a few of those moments - thank god for different sized raw plugs!

I previously had a set from argos (not sure what make) wasn't that impressed - I think I'll go with a branded one now.
