Cam belt and pump and keep it until it goes bang.
From £450 at Citroen
https://www.charterscitroen.com/offers/citroen-fixed-price-timing-belt-kits-399/I would get the oil and filter changed with Fully synthetic oil every year, plus the air filter.Air filter DIY job for around £10.
Old style diesels like fresh oil and clean air.
My old rover diesels did 200k easy.
They used Citroen Diesel engines.
If it’s not had a fuel filter I would get it done as well.1 -

Anyone aware of how long the cambelt takes on C4 HDI 1.6 diesel (08)? I've found a well reviewed after market cam belt for £70. If a mechanic would agree to fit that, and it was a 2 hour job, then it would keep the cost down somewhat.0 -

By big job, are you talking 23 hours +?0 -
Most mechanics won't fit customer supplied parts, it's not worth the hassle.
Just find a grubby but busy looking garage and ask for a quote on the whole job. If you can find out where the taxis use, try there.
On the car itself, unless it's given you cause to worry I'd just service it, do the belts and use it until something goes wrong. Worst case is you'll need to get a taxi to work and that's going to cost you a lot less than £7k.1 -

By big job, are you talking 23 hours +?I would say 2-3 hours at least, give a hint to where you are.
ie lincs, Essex, Surrey.
Then you might get a recommendation from a member on here.
I know a good one in Croydon. Before I moved had been using him for 20 years.0 -

I haven't driven since moving here 4 years ago but partner has used 3 different garages, no great experiences and they've been unfriendly.
When the thermostat failed, a garage with a 'decent' reputation quoted her £290 to replace it. I told her I'll find somewhere, and found a garage that did it for £90. I'd happily use them again, but they couldn't speak any English and when we picked the car up we couldn't understand each other. However, they fixed it for a great price.

Keep the C4 and drive it till the wheels fall off.
our current cars:
06 Skoda now on 109k cost £1000 in 2020.
05 Audi now on 174k cost £1000 in 2019.
we only do about 5k miles a year in each though. But cheap motoring.2 -
If you do decide to go newer you might have to avoid diesels if not doing the daily miles due to dpf crap. One of the reasons we’re keeping our old diesels. Also keep in mind prices will fall over the coming year due to economic issues.0
