British Gas Energy Account

I was looking for a bit of advice.

I recently split up with my partner, the energy account is in her name, I am still living in the property and she has moved out (We are with British Gas). I want to change the account for this property into my name but not sure if this could be done or if I would need a new account.

I spoke with British Gas online via their online chat and they sent me a link to go to sign up as if I was moving into the property for the first time. However when I went to the link and clicked on PAYG as the option (That's what I'm on atm with a smart meter), it wouldn't let me giving the error:-

Sorry, we’re having a few problems

We’re unable to do this online for you at the moment, but we’re working on it. Please give us a call on the number below so we can move you into your new home.

Pay As You Go customers 0330 100 0303

Now I tried phoning this number and going through the options but it says they can't setup new customers over the phone and I need to do it online. I just wondered might it be better if I signed up with the option  "pay when you get the bill instead"? I've seen quite a few videos online of people saying they changed from payg to only paying for what they have used in the month going by their meters. Is this a viable option in this situation? I've spent ages trying to get through on the phone to someone to speak about this but it's a bit of a nightmare.
