I can spend from around £17 to several hundred
but what is the difference ?

Why not ask in the DIY section of the forum.1

The Leica Disto range is good, with a good app to help you record the measurements. I bought my daughter one (the Disto One) for about £90.The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.1

What do you reckon to https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mileseey-Electronic-Accuracy-Measurement-Pythagoras/dp/B085NX87K3?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1&psc=1its only £28 and has 3,600 good reviews

In the end you need to decide what you need it for - are you using it in your business where you need an accurate, robust and reliable tool for everyday use or is it going to spend most of its time in a cupboard and just come out occasionally when you need to do a quick measure up.
If the former, thens it's probably worth spending a bit more to get a decent one, if the latter then almost anything that does the job with reasonable accuracy will do, in fact a tape measure will probably suffice What sort of accuracy do you want +/- mm or +/- an inch.
How about this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Distance-Measureing-Portable-Indication-Operation/dp/B0B9S1TDHY/ref=sr_1_27?crid=2KV03QV9SIF8Q&keywords=laser+measure+device&qid=1663164816&s=diy&sprefix=laser+measure,diy,66&sr=1-27
Dont forget that if it's not used often, then make sure you remove the batteries when it's in storage to prvent damage by leakageNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers1 -
The down side of laser measures is that you need a surface to bounce the beam off.
So they're ideal for measuring the size of a room wall to wall for instance, but not so good for measuring say, the length of a sofa or cupboard or an external wall.1 -

I bought Parkside one recently from Lidl for just £20 and it can also detect studs, pipes and wires in walls. In terms of measurement it has options for measuring area and volume. It's not available at Lidl ATM, but you can buy it for the same price on ebay.I used it several times and am happy with it.

If its virtually a one-off, just to produce some plans, then use a tape measure and save the expense of it sitting in a drawer for the rest of its life.MouldyOldDough said:
