Potted plants for sheltered area

My front door has my lounge over the top of it so it gets little to no rain and is shaded a lot of the time.
I would like to have a few potted plants to brighten things up, I've recently put stones over what soil was there to deter cats from using it as a toilet.
What kind of plants would be recommended for a location like this?

Being in a pot, you will need to water the plant on a regular basis. But it also needs to be able to tolerate periods of drought when you neglect to water. I have a Phormium Tenax Biffino (bronze) that has been in a pot for many years, and regularly neglected. It is surviving quite well. One may well work for you.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
