2011 Fiesta Battery Clamp nut size

Good morning all. I am doing up my son's old 2011 Fiesta. He had a new battery installed in 2020, but the fitter didn't replace the clamp.
I have the clamp, just need the M size of the 2 nuts I need to fasten it down.
It's SORN at the mo, so can't just pop down to Halfords!

Over to you experts!
Many thanks

    Do you have the nuts?
  • No, the bolts are in the box. I have the clamp, but no nuts.
So before I head to a Motor parts shop, I need the nut size, M"/3/4/5/6 etc?

Can you not measure the diameter of the bolts at the threaded part and the pitch of the thread (peak to peak)? Probably are metric. Could be 1mm or 1.5mm pitch as an example. i.e. Mdiameter x 1/1.5 bolt and same size nut to fit.
Or take a bolt to the motor parts shop?
I am a bit confused as to what you have and don't have. Or what the clamping arrangement is.
  • Just go to halfords and buy a assorted tray of metric nuts.  I would guess at m8

    1. Search your box of nuts that might come in handy one day, doesn't everyone have one of those?
    2. Ask on a Fiesta forum.
    3. Look in the workshop manual, may be available on line.
    4. Go to a nut shop and say "can I have some nuts to fit these bolts please?"
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

All most certain it wont be M13, its not a standard size. Probably M6 or M8
  • There we go, as I said earlier, the car is SORN, so can’t drive it to Halfords.

    No, I don’t have a box of nuts that I don’t use!

I had to chuckle at that   I've got a garage full of "stuff" that "might come in handy one day", much to my wife's chagrin.  And for some reason she seems to get really annoyed when I tell her that that particular widget that's been kicking around for years has finally been used, and saved me a trip to buy a specific part to fix something-or-other.

To be honest, that retaining bar is not actually super-critical.  Unless you're going to be driving around a race-track and pulling doughnuts, I wouldn't worry too much about it.  Wait until you've got the car back on the road, then take it down to any motor factor who'll odds-on have a quick look and supply you with the correct nuts for a few pence.

<Edit>  Actually, thinking about it - very often the bolts have kind of a "J" hook on the bottom that just loops around a hole in the bottom of the tray.  If that's the case, you could just remove one of them and take the bolt down to the shop to get a nut that fits.  Must admit I don't know the Fiesta in particular - but on pretty much most cars I've owned, those bolts are very easy to just un-latch (might need to just remove the battery first to get access, but that's no big deal).
