Learning Thermostat advice

So we had our extension done a couple of years ago, and it's got wet underfloor heating. I'm tired of faffing around every winter trying to get the extension warm enough at the right times and wonder which one of the clever thermostats would do the job for me. I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Here's what we have:
  • combi boiler
  • 2 manual thermostats, one in the main hallway, one in the extension
  • a Drayton LP722 (2 zone) thermostat in the hall, which is what I use to program the on/off times.

And what I want:
  • to be able to set extension at 19 degrees from 7:30-9:30  mon -wed, 8:30-11:30  thu-fri etc
  • to have some form of manual control so OH can press a button to go up a degree or 2
  • a system that still works if internet connectivity isn't available
I've done a lot of reading, but it's just gotten me confused - I've even read that not all of the smart systems work properly with Wet underfloor heating - is that true?

Thanks for any help.

At the risk of sounding like a fan-boi your requirements sound like the Drayton Wiser system would suit ideally, give it a google.

Hi, yes it is in the slab; and then tiles on top of the slab.

Thanks, I did see the Drayton - it's all wireless isn't it? One thing it wasn't clear about was what would happen to the existing wires to the thermostats (with any wireless system).

And no, I don't think you're a fanboi is you've found something that works for you.

Yes,all wireless,I don't have UFH though I'd imagine it would operate much like the room thermostats and smart TRV's which I've set individually to my time and temperature needs, apart from initially finding what worked best it's really been a case of fit and forget.
Went with Drayton as the existing setup was Drayton so all that was needed was removal of the old controller and straight swap with the new.
I left the old thermostat which was wired in place as I'm renting and not permitted to remove it,just turned it up to full so that it's always on as such though the Wiser is in charge of running the show.Best practice is to remove it but not strictly necessary and forbidden in my case anyway.

  • Thanks, I've been reading up on the Drayton, and it seems they've got a separate unit (costing hundreds of pounds) for UFH. It seems very much overkill, and I can't see if the standard thermostat will do underfloor.

Bumping in the hope someone with experience sees this.

Try this forum. There are a lot of very knowledgeable posters who are using various smart heating controls:

  • I'm a satisfied Tado customer, although I have no experience of UFH. Perhaps this is of use: How does tado° control underfloor heating systems? | Help Center

Underfloor is often terrible at instant heat and is better at low constant heat, You will want it on hr's before its needed, Bigger the slab the longer it takes to warm up, It may be cheaper to simply add a radiator.
  • I have a Siemens digital thermostat in my system, which can be set for either day or evening but is not timed but manually changed over by button on front, each can be set individually, this is thermostat only and not time clock also battery driven so does not need a supply so should be direct replacement, battery lasts for years, cannot see model at moment but will sort if interested
