British Gas have increased standard rate tariff ahead of 1 October (!!!)
Just logged into British Gas today to view my current tariff - on standard variable / the cap and it says:
Electricity:
Standard unit rate: 35.796p per kWh
Standing charge: 33.157p per day
Previously the unit rate was 29p.
I thought it only goes up in October 1st?
Does anyone else see this? Can the do this already?

In addition - they've also changed my payment method from Quarterly variable direct debit to monthly direct debit??!0

There is usually a note somewhere stating it is effective 1st October....This happens every 6 months with BG as they like to show what is coming to reduce the phone calls from people asking what it is going to be...... not sure it is working

They did the same before the April cap increase, I spoke to someone who assured me that the increased SVT would only kick in on 1st April. I checked my bill and they correctly charged me.

I’m pretty sure I remember near identical posts in March, BG standard procedure most likely.Arch0

I understand customers are faced with rising energy prices and will need to pay higher unit rates.
But why are companies increasing their standing charges when they are not changing the service they provide ?
Surely this profiteering needs to be stopped and if not then justify recovery via windfall tax.
Companies should be doing every thing in their power to manage & reduce the impact of high energy costs. Not make matters worse for their customers.

The suppliers don't set the standing charge - it isn't their profit.Hollymead said:I understand customers are faced with rising energy prices and will need to pay higher unit rates.
