£400 discount from October: reduction of invoice or refund by direct debit?

Hi,

My current electricity bill is only about £55 a month currently, so with £66 discount coming from October, does that mean my balance will go positive, or I will get paid £66 to my bank account?

I am with EDF, and paying by direct debit.
  • EDF have published how they are doing it here:

For the monthly direct debit payments, they say "An automatic refund each month to the bank account your Direct Debit payments are taken from"

Huh, ok, I would have actually preferred to have it added to my EDF account in credit.

BG are doing similar - I’ve setup a standing order to send it back into the account 🤣

If you can pay the £66 as an additional payment do that then you will have some credit to call on when the prices jump in years to come that is unless the October increase goes ahead but the cap limits bills to £2500.
Someone please tell me what money is

How can the October increase go ahead but the cap still limit bills?

The cap is a price limit, not a bill limit, too many people already get that bit wrong so best not to use the words that way even if it wasn't exactly what you meant.

  • E.ON/Sainsbury's Energy have said:

The government has announced (29 July) more information around how you will receive the Energy Bills Support Scheme payment. Importantly, you don't need to apply for the scheme, all households will start to receive £400 off their energy bills from October 2022.

You'll see a discount of £66 applied to your energy bills in October and November, and £67 a month from December to March 2023.

    • Fixed Direct Debit customers will receive the money automatically as a deduction to their monthly Direct Debit.

    • Pay on receipt of bill customers and regular cash payment customers will see the money automatically applied as a credit to their energy accounts in the first week of each month. This will show as a credit in the payments section of their monthly bill.

    • Smart prepayment customers will see the money credited directly to their meters as a top up in the first week of each month.

    • Traditional prepayment customers will be provided with vouchers in the first week of each month. These will only be redeemable at the Post Office, not at all top-up locations.
