Radiator thermostats

How many people actually use their radiator thermostats?
We simply run our boiler for say 30 minutes at a time and the room temperature never reaches the cut off....
This is why we Ihave low bills

  • Yes i have Hive radiator thermostats and make good use of them

    • Sometimes i want all my rooms the same temperature
    • Sometimes i want to heat only some rooms
    • Sometimes i want some rooms colder or warmer than others

My first winter in this house back in 2011 when there were no TRV's of any kind was very expensive.
  • Yes, I have electronic TRVs with multi-point temp profiles for weekdays and weekends.

We have Hive ones on the upstairs bedroom radiators as upstairs tends to get hotter and we don't use the rooms as much so they are set quite low and seem more controllable than the normal ones, downstairs we have normal thermostats on the radiators but they are generally on the maximum so we would really just need radiator thermostats upstairs

If you only have the heating on for a very short while the thermostats are probably not that cost effective

If you mean manual TRVs - Set mine to 3 in bedrooms, and 4 elsewhere. Temperatures monitored throughout the house, and the control system is set maintain a programmed temperature. The target temperature varies throughout the course of the day/week. Takes a bit more than 30 minutes to get up to temperature in the morning, but my gas consumption is low and I'm still not freezing my nutz off.

    How low though?
We don't "turn on and leave on" as many appear to do...

Don't use manual TRV's apart from upstairs and downstairs water closets, vestibule, rest are Drayton Wiser units in the kitchen, both bedrooms and lounge.
Basically set so that heating is off when not as home, overnight and a minimum of 14C is maintained without any input needed, uncertain if the Draytons save much once their liking for batteries is accounted for, though it wasn't done for money saving as such, more for comfort admittedly.
Guessing the AA batteries are the cost of the convenience.

    I do. I have 5 rooms (+kitchen & bathroom) but really only use 2.
1 of the used rooms has the room 'stat, the other is set to 3 & the 3 unused rooms' TRVs all sit at ~1.5 (get the odd tweak every now & then to stop sticking) - they will close before the room 'stat switches the system off. I also have temp.monitors in 4 of the rooms.

I have recently bought a couple of smart TRVs - more to satisfy my inner geek than in expectation of any significant savings given my usage.

Currently at ~4500KWh of gas for the last year. The heating is currently off, but once it gets cold, the home automation system will take control and fire up the boiler when necessary.
