Ultimate protection.... Sapphire glass. Shellrus Sapphire Screen Protector Review - Mobile Reviews Eh (mobilereviews-eh.ca)
That said, I've never bothered and not had any problems.... just don't put it into pockets with change or keys etc...
However, without your phone model it's not possible to recommend an exact protector.....

As mentioned, what phone is it?

I'm an Android phone user and never felt the need to get a screen protector and never had any problems with scratched up screens on any of my phones, and I don't exactly handle them with care. Also, a screen protector won't prevent a screen from breaking if you drop it, you're better off with a good bumper case for that.

I put a tempered glass screen protector on my smartphone over a year ago, along with a case, and the phone has survived spending a lot of time stuffed into a pocket, or dropped when I missed the aforesaid pocket!
The protector has a few minor scratches on it now, but I have a spare as it came in a pack of two, and the first one went on first time without any unsightly bubbles that couldn't be removed!

Sorry for the delay... the phone is a cheap, android 'Oppo'. Received as a gift. I see that tempered glass things are available for it for not very much on ebay. Possibly that would be the way to go?

I've always put a decent "rubbery" case and a glass screen protector on my phones. I've sometimes had to replace the screen protector as it got broken - whether the actual screen would have been broken if I'd not had the screen protector on I can't say but I like to think it gave protection.

I usually pay about £2.50 on Ebay. They're easy enough to put on with a bit of practice and you need to make sure the screen is clean. I find if you do get a speck of dust underneath it looks obvious when the phone screen is not lit up, but isn't obvious when it's lit up and you're using it.
