Log Burner Quote

Options
Please can people let me know if this quote seems a bit reasonable for a log burning stove to replace a gas one. Is there any parts of the quote we could potentially save on? Thanks in advance for any help 😊

Not far off what I paid for my stove installation a few years back for labour & liner. Don't see any mention of a cowel though - You need to query that.

With the Riva 50, Stovax used to do a fan kit - If they still do one, I'd suggest getting it fitted during installation. It will help to get the heat circulating in the room.
Using a 4 sided frame suggests that you are elevating it off the floor - Be very careful when putting a fresh log in. It is all too easy to knock a hot ember out and have it burn the carpet. The higher the stove is above the hearth, the further an ember is likely to travel.
The chimney breast above the stove can get extremely hot. I don't have a mantle to deflect hot air, and I regularly see temperatures up to 180°C - Your regular gypsum plaster will crack and flake off, so use a heat resistant plaster (Vitcas or pure lime), and don't hang a TV above the stove.

  • That’s the price I’ve just paid for an Morso stove with an external twin walled flu.

I’d definitely be getting quotes elsewhere - where are you located?

  • The stove can be had £200 cheaper elsewhere. They really shouldn’t need a boom lift to do this either - a ladder works just as well.
The flu kit should only be around £700 inc vat total.  No more than £3.5k unless it’s a complicated job.

  • You could also self install - YouTube is a wonderful place if you’re okay with heights

Depends on the height and how risk averse the installers are. A few might do it with ladders, others would want scaffolding erected. A cherry picker (boom lift) is a reasonably priced alternative.

A DIY install is an option, but once Building Control fees are taken in to account along with waste disposal costs, £600 is quite reasonable.

Thank you for all the really helpful advice everyone it is really appreciated. I did think the cost of the flue seemed a bit expensive as suggested.

We have a really narrow and very shallow chimney so they said we could not fully fit it in a recess so the cassette / inset option was what they recommended.

On the facade the log burner is to be fitted we have an attached garage so I think that is why they need the boom lift as they would struggle to get a ladder in the right place.

    We live near Peterborough

If you have a tall thin chimney, then it probably isn't a good idea to lean a ladder up against it. If the mortar holding it together is weak, there is a risk of it being pushed over.

So more complicated than presumed - make sure you do get other quotes from local businesses
