I asked them to explain the reasons why this was overpaid and they emailed back that it was too long ago and is now written off.
Moral of the story is, make sure they are serious before you pay.1 -

I've had a couple of other nonsense demands for payment, one from a council for an address they invented and didn't exist and another for a mobile. phone for £600 for 3 days data, they admitted it was impossible then sold the debt to a debt company that chased me for a year and then sold it to another debt company.
The tactic of wasting their time until they see there's no profit in it and write it off seems to work.1
