In Home Display
Options
I’ve just been on the phone with EON Next and they have informed me that my in home display is inaccurate and I’m more than £300 in debit to them. I stated that I carefully use my smart meters in home display to make sure I stick to budget but they said it’s inaccurate and there’s nothing they can do about this. I have only ever been with EON since living in this home so the in home display was provided by them. Is there anyway to appeal? Thankyou!

The in home display is not used for billing and never has been.
The only numbers that matter are the readings from the smart meter itself. Have you checked these numbers to see if they are the same as the ones on your bill?0 -
The IHD is only ‘nearly’ accurate if the supplier has sent the correct tariff information to your electricity and gas meters AND if the comms hub is receiving usage data from BOTH meters.
Even with the correct tariff information set in the meter for gas, the cost is only approximate. The gas proxy meter in the comms hub uses a fixed calorific value to convert gas volume to kWh whereas actual billing uses an average calorific value.
As stated above, the IHD is advisory only. You have no grounds for appeal - sorry.0 -

Most suppliers treat the IHD or a gimmick or gadget and that only gives a rough approximation, and then it depends on the supplier actually uploading the correct tariff. By all means use it day-to-day to calculate your consumption, but you should use a "real" reading at least once a month to ensure your finances remain on track.

My EDF IHD is no longer able to do its "sums" even though the tariff is loaded correctly.
Gas is fine, electricity is currently showing "3.25 kWh used = 14p" when the unit rate is 34.85p
However, the actual kWh usage is correct for both, so try checking that rather than the ££s and pence.
If the billing is correct then unfortunately you have no comeback with any supplier if the IHD is faulty.0 -
My IHD is currently showing old tariff rates so is effectively useless. Even if it was updated, in just over 3 weeks when the new rates come into effect, it will once again become useless.
EON Next states on their website that the IHD is 'designed to highlight areas of energy use' and 'It's not intended to replace your more accurate meter' and that 'It can complement your smart meter'.

I went a bit ballistic on the eon next forums about this. When my last fix ended in January I was placed on to the SVT but my in home display didn't update. So it continued to show lower cost of use that the reality was. I went on the forums pleading with them to look in to their IHD's and they were aware of this happening to vast vast numbers of their customers.
My worry at the time was that people would look at their IHD's, see that they'd only spent say £1.50 that day and think "ah that's not so bad", but in reality they were spending upwards of £3 a day and accruing a massive debt. I started keeping a spreadsheet of my usage like the bad old days shortly afterwards and my IHD is now in a drawer somewhere. Funnily enough, around 4 or 5 weeks ago my IHD did update to show the SVT and not the fix I took out in June.
Moral of the story is don't trust the IHD, keep a manual record of your readings if possible.0 -
Many people who understand these meters recognise that the IHD is not a reliable source of financial data, but you have to feel sympathy for people who have a "smart" meter in their house (often thinking the IHD is actually the smart meter), see a monetary value displayed on it and believe it.
