looking for help and advice please - I'm on an old version 'office 2013'  which is not being supported in 2023 (they keep telling me this) I was looking to update but it looks like its now costly. Is that the way it is now, you pay monthly or a large one off fee?  When I brought mine years ago it was through a work scheme but I'm now retired.  I think that if I was a teacher or student i can get it for free  but that doesn't apply to me.  I only use it for a couple of excel spreadsheets and an odd word document.  I do use email.  Anyone got any advice.  thank you

You can use open source free software such as google sheets or libre office, if you really MS office pixel codes will give you option for buying the current non cloud/non storage versions for reasonable pricing but you do have to still link it to a microsoft account and only for one device.

The fees are cheaper to buy annually than monthly, and the one-off costs can be reduced quite significantly, as can the annual fees.  Depends how much you favour wanting the shiniest new version and how many computers you want to shove it on.

Libre Office will do everything you are likely to need to do for free
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I'm still happily running Office 2010 and know there will be a problem if I want to install it on a new PC, but it can be done. If you really want MS Office, and not a free compatible, you can buy Office 2021 as a one-off purchase from Microsoft for £119.99 (https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/p/office-home-student-2021/CFQ7TTC0H8N8?activetab=pivot:overviewtab) or cheaper elsewhere.

I also run 2010 and actually have a copy of 2000 that works on W10

When W10 came out we were told it would not work but it did.

No need for alternatives at all.

If you only use it occasionally and don't do anything fancy with macro's etc then just create an account on www.office.com and use the free online version. Its Microsoft Office and free.
