We’re offering a hydrogen gas supply, new hydrogen appliances and a new hydrogen boiler, all at no cost, to up to 300 homes . £1000 sign up present .
SGN have contacted whole area and invited us to a meeting next week .
This is in scotland and apparently backed by the government .
I phoned them to be told when pipelines are laid in street you have the choice but they did say prices would be no lower than gas prices in general .
And that £1000 would be paid yearly at £250 .
Any advice please .

Are you saying that a company has offered to connect you to a hydrogen supply network?

    Yes .
A trial linked to wind turbines .

Is this "H100 Fife"? It sounds interesting. I would definitely express an interest if it was offered here (and not just because my current gas boiler is almost old enough to vote :D ).

A hydrogen gas trial 'linked to wind turbines'? You've lost me.
I fail to see the appeal of paying £1000 to trial it if the gas cost is no less than mains gas, unless you are doing it simply to get the boiler replaced?

    Hi,

You're volunteering to be a guinea pig.  Other than the free £1000 there won't be much benefit.

I would ask about the costs of going back to natural gas if you want to and what happens if they decide to stop supplying hydrogen at some point in the future.

Ultimately if you don't think you'll end up out if pocket and you wold find it interesting to be part of an experiment then go for it.

If it looks like there might be costs down the line, or if you have no interest in it then steer clear.
  • SGN said if i wanted to go back to natural gas they would do this at no cost to me . Hydrogen gas is the future according to scottish government . Local scottish member of parliament's and councellors all seem to be on board .
    All snp supporters .
Maybe since the pipeline is being laid up our street anyway i should sit back for a year and see how it goes .
Of course a lot of my neighbours just see the free £1000 handout .

Think the customer gets the £1000 incentive?

Maybe hydrogen created by electrolysis using excess wind energy?

I wish I could sign up!
I live on the lovely Fife coast but unfortunately we are a few miles outside the catchment area for this project.

macman, the ideal place for gigantic wind turbines is out in the North sea miles from land. Unfortunately the costs of hundreds of miles of undersea cable to carry those currents ashore is prohibitive.
This experimental project plans to use that electricity to electrolyse sea water to generate hydrogen (and oxygen) at source. These can then be piped to shore relatively cheaply.
    A really exciting project.
