Please help..6336 annual bill from edf

Please help. We gave EDF our readings and they were lower than the estimates. I know prices set to rise drastically but they claim we need to pay 6336 a year and at the end of September 528.....July was 218(3 bedroom house..4 person family). Where is the cap when they are stating 6336 a year? We are frightened? Any advice....what can we say if we call them?

The cap figure that is often talked about is not an upper limit on how much everyone will have to pay. It is a cap based on a typical household. If you use more electricity and/or gas than the typical household, you will pay more.
Do you have the details of how many units (electricity and gas) you have used over the past 12 months, the current electricity and gas price per unit you are paying and the standard charges?
Are you/were you on a fixed deal that ended recently?

@fifilottie You say you have just given EDF your readings - look back on your bills and find when the last actual meter was given - look for the letter A or C or our read or your read. What were those and the recent readings please ? We can then have a stab at estimating your future cost.
Have you had the £150 ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill1 -
Mods, could we move this to the main energy board, please? The OP might get more responses there. Thanks!1

Thank you Ginger Tim. I have put this in the wrong topic(!!?).
Thank you for your replies everyone though!!! Partner controls the energy side of the bills so I haven't got access to his account right now but can give the following details of what I wrote down last night from the bill statement. There are discrepancies as on the 4th of September they over estimated the gas....then we gave reading and then suddenly their estimation given on the bill yesterday for gas suddenly went up to make us look like we used more than their estimate ( I cant remember when we last had the heating on!!)
Gas
29 Nov - 31 March 22
Estimate - 12741 13898 estimate (??)
1st April 22 - 05 Sep 22 Estimate 13898 ( higher yesterday) 14309 our reading
Electricity
26/06/21 - 05/09/22 Estimate 26315 26635 our reading
I am not sure any of these numbers help. I am aware that we have been using too much but obviously in recent times have been cutting down and will continue too. We are moving house in a month will have to look at this all again and switch?? We will also have a log burner so am prepared to avoid the heating where possible and make tremendous cuts ( like everyone else). I am assuming future usage will not be the same as previous. I have had advice for partner to ring and state he will pay a minimum of 300 a month ( yikes, so muich anyway!!), cut down on usage and then reassess. We are on a standard variable tariff. We were previously with a company that went bust so it switched us to edf.
I think I am completely ignorant and misinterpreted what the "cap" meant. It just caps the amount they charge per unit...not on whole bill. We really need to change our ways. Just feel that even with the current situation over 6 grand a year seems so much. Like everyone else we are not sure where this invisible money will come from, we are not over spenders or anything.
WE got out 150 Robin 9...much appreciated, but as we all know it is barely a scratch on the surface but I am grateful.
Many thanks, please advise0 -

You're not completely ignorant, but yes you have misinterpreted the cap. You've got it right now though, it sets a maximum price per unit.fifilottie said:I think I am completely ignorant and misinterpreted what the "cap" meant. It just caps the amount they charge per unit...not on whole bill.
We really need to get two numbers for each fuel marked as "actual" or "customer read" or something like that, then we can try and work out what your annual usage really is. As you're on the standard variable tariff, we can have a close guess at your unit rates.
I'm slightly confused by your description of Sept 4th though - as I read it, they had an estimate (which you call an overestimate but it looks lower than your "our reading" number), and when you gave them a real reading they changed the estimate upwards? Was the reading you gave to them higher or lower than the estimate they already had? When you give a reading, unless it looks impossible (like you've missed a number or something) then they will change their estimate to better match your 'true' number.1
