What is propping the value of VLS100 up currently? On Friday all the major stock indexes appeared to fall, but the price of VLS rose. I assume it was to do with currency valuation, but I didn't understand the mechanics behind it.
Yes, currency fluctuations - with about 70-75% of sterling-denominated VLS100 being listed outside the UK, the plummeting pound more than compensated for the drop in overseas equity prices.

The use of illiquid assets can take a decade to unwind if it fails.   This is why another rule of thumb is to not invest in funds with high levels of illiquid assets.

On the other hand my one global Real Estate fund is still showing positive growth over the last 12 months and before. So maybe something to be said for illiquid assets after all.

To be fair, I am fully aware that it could get gated at some point, and in fact it did during Covid, but I can easily live with this, on the assumption it would be open again at some point. Also the fund manager is one of the big boys and not some unknown.

Nobody is ever unhappy when things are going well.

We know from your posting history that you know what you are doing and understand how these work.    I wouldn't be confident applying that to everyone

Trying to compare vanguard to Beaufort is like comparing chocolate to cheese.  Beaufort had an extremely high ratio of illiquid assets.   It was that which caused the bulk of the problems.     A platform with a high level of liquid assets would not suffer the same problem.

Plus Beaufort Securities had the trading morals of someone who traffics underage girls into prostitution
