Hybrid Heat Pump

My council has hooked me up with E.on to get energy saving improvements to my house, but the only thing they can offer is a hybrid heat pump which will switch between air source heat and my existing gas boiler, depending on which is cheapest.

When gas boilers are finally banned will such a hybrid be defunct?

Who knows? - there are no proposals to ban gas boilers. Ever.
You may be thinking of the proposal to stop fitting gas boilers in new houses after 2025 because they will be designed differently (but we have a new government now and a general election before 2025).
Under current rules you can keep your gas boiler as long as you wish and indeed new boilers will still be freely sold for existing houses.

Domestic heat pumps are a developing technology. My personal belief is that we will still be using gas boilers in 50 years time, although the 'gas' will be different from today, long after that hybrid heat pump has become a museum piece along with typewriters and dial-up modems.

Thank you Alderbank for a common sense answer.
Since our desire to comply with any regulation dreamt-up by a covid government, we are now actively looking for reasons NOT to do as we please.

There was a policy being bandied around with the expectation of seeing gas boilers being phased out completely by 2050. Quite how far the discussions got, I wouldn't like to say. But if the nation is to cut CO2 emissions, then it will become a reality at some point. That said, gas is a finite commodity, so when it runs out, you won't have a choice in the matter. And no, hydrogen won't be the answer - The distribution network would need a serious amount of work to allow for hydrogen to be piped to every property, and we don't have the spare electricity capacity to produce a viable quantity of hydrogen.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

We have decades worth of shale gas under our feet if we care to go after it. Meanwhile, if India, China and Russia can be persuaded to go full eco then maybe it'll be worth considering our contribution to world CO2. What is it currently, about 1%?
